Kitchen Apple Sauce Recipe

This simple homemade applesauce recipe shows you exactly how to make it out of things you may already have in your kitchen—apples, water, and cinnamon.

Starting with the apples: You could use any type of apple for this homemade applesauce recipe, but Golden Delicious is a great option as they tend to be a bit softer, allowing for them to cook down easily. Apples are packed full of nutrients including vitamins C and K, fiber, potassium, and polyphenols. They have even been shown to help lower the risk of heart disease.

Cinnamon is a spice that is shows up frequently in apple dishes. Cinnamon has many health benefits, including its ability to help fight infections. It’s also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and may even be antidiabetic.

If you want to add a little extra sweetness to your apple sauce, try adding in a ¼ cup of brown sugar. This step is elective, and I usually skip it, as keeping apple sauce free of added sugars makes the natural sweetness that much more detectable. While brown sugar doesn’t necessarily provide health benefits (beyond carbohydrates for energy), it does contain a trace amount more minerals than white, although not enough to make a material difference health-wise.

This homemade applesauce will be hot once prepared, and it is delicious when eaten warm. If you prefer your applesauce cold, cool it, store it in the refrigerator, and enjoy it for up to 1 week.

This baby-friendly, kid-friendly Kitchen Applesauce will be hot once prepared, and it is delicious to eat while warm. If you prefer your applesauce cold, cool it, store it in the refrigerator, and enjoy it for up to 1 week! If you want to add a little extra sweetness to your apple sauce and you're preparing it for kids over the age of 2, try adding in a ¼ cup of brown sugar. This step is elective and I usually skip it, as keeping apple sauce free of added sugars makes the natural sweetness of the apples that much more detectable. Ingredients

  • 8 apples (seeds and core removed, roughly chopped)
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ cup brown sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped apples, water, cinnamon and brown sugar in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until apples are tender and skins come loose.
  3. Transfer to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
  4. Serve hot or cold.

Notes

Keeps for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.
