So my 9-year-old took this pic of me shucking corn during dinner prep last holiday weekend. Later when I was looking through photos, it occurred to me that I should have suggested we do the reverse…

Shucking corn is one of those tasks that are perfect for getting kids involved in meal prep. A missed opportunity on my part!

Involving kids in the kitchen is one of the most effective ways to reduce picky eating and encourage healthy food choices.

Ideas for kiddo jobs by age:⠀

Age:18 months - 3 years⠀

Toddler helping mix avocado in bowl with parent

A 17-month old little girl helping out in the kitchen! Shoutout to her wonderful parents for permission to share!

  • Pouring measured ingredients into a bowl

  • Stirring batters

  • Tearing lettuce

  • Brushing oil with a pastry brush

  • Washing fruits & veggies

Age: 4-6 years old

  • Setting the table

  • Greasing baking pans

  • Rolling out pie crust or cookie dough with a rolling pin

  • Spraying and wiping the table

  • Cracking raw and peeling hard-cooked eggs

Age: 7-10 years old

  • Grating cheese

  • Cutting fruits and veggies with a small paring knife

  • Peeling fruits and veggies

  • Forming cookies and/or patties

  • Scooping batter
